Quake heroes get bravery awards BY FIONA THOMAS The emotion of the February 2011 earthquake is something that sticks with Kevin Carr. Lieutenant-Commander Carr (right), or “Chalky” to friends, was named a recipient of the New Zealand Bravery Medal today for his efforts in a 12-hour rescue operation at the CTV building on February 22. The St Albans man led a team of five from HMNZS Pegasus Naval Reserve into the central city to help with rescue efforts. He crawled repeatedly into tight, dark and smoke-filled gaps to search for survivors and kept going even after a portion of roof he stood on collapsed, injuring his leg. But he says he is just one of many

who “pitched in to save as many lives as they could” and would do it all again. “I’m incredibly honoured to have received the award but also deeply humbled because there are hundreds and hundreds of other people who did extraordinary things that night but will never be recognised,” he said. “My immediate instinct without a doubt was to get in and help as many people as we could.” He said seeing the disaster unfold in his own city left the biggest impact on him. •Turn to page 7

The Haze wins rock title

We asked readers if they were following the 2014 FIFA World Cup, and which team they supported.

It was fourth time lucky for The Haze, who won this year’s Canterbury Smokefree Rockquest at the Aurora Centre last Friday night. The band, made up of students from Christchurch Boys’ High School and St Andrew’s College was competing for the fourth year in a row and improved on their placing of second at last year’s competition. Over 200 supporters watched the four-piece rock band battle against 11 of the region’s top bands in the competition. The band is made up of Max Earnshaw, Sam Boyles, Chris Nolan and Zac Knopp. Max also received the APRA lyric writer’s award, winning $50 cash. Second place in the band category went to Hagley Community College five piece Aura.

Normans Rd plan rejected BY FIONA THOMAS

A plan to ban right-hand turns from Normans Rd has been rejected by the community. The Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board last week went against the recommendation of city council staff to ban right-hand turns from Normans Rd on to Papanui Rd in peak traffic times. The road has been causing problems with left-turning drivers facing long waits stuck behind right-turning drivers, delayed by congestion on the busy Papanui Rd. A city council report delivered to the community board in March out-

lined dangers on the road. The report said some left-turning drivers had resorted to mounting the pavement to get around the traffic, posing a danger to pedestrians. City council staff had recommended a ban on right-hand turns from 7am-9am and 3pm-7pm on weekdays. The measure would be enforced with signage, with a total cost of $600. But the community board last Monday turned down the proposal and asked city council staff to look at options for narrowing the splitter island on the road, to allow cars to turn both left and right. Community board chairwoman

Val Carter said the board had received negative feedback about the proposed turning ban. “Residents are very, very anti us putting that no right-hand turn in, we do have to listen to the residents as well,” she said. The community board received three submissions about the intersection and Ms Carter said she had also received a number of phone calls about the plan. She said people were concerned the left-turn ban would make drivers do a “rat run” through other streets to get to the central city. Two of the three submissions sent to the board said removing the split-

Aaron Keown has been elected as the new deputy chairman of the ShirleyPapanui Community Board. Mr Keown steps into the role after former deputy chairwoman Gemma Maslin stood down earlier this month. He was voted into the role unanimously by those in attendance at the meeting. Mr Keown also sits on the Canterbury District Health Board. He was previously a city councillor for Shirley-Papanui but did not win back his seat in the October 2013 local body elections.

Project plans approved

The Shirley-Papanui Community Board last week approved plans for a shared pedestrian and cycleway project between Rutland and Grassmere Sts. The separated cycleway would be the first stage of a larger major cycleway called the Papanui Parallel, extending from Papanui to the central city. It would provide an alternative to using adjacent roads for cyclists and pedestrians. Funds for the project would come from the city council’s three year plan. A decision about the pathway will now be made by city councillors. The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board approved new no stopping restrictions on the intersection of Inwoods and Mairehau Rds last week. The no stopping restriction was proposed to address delays for traffic turning right from Inwoods Rd onto Mairehau Rd, where queues of up to 10 vehicles have been observed at peak times. Parking areas on Inwoods Rd prevent the left and right turning traffic from queuing separately, while cars parked close to the intersection on Mairehau Rd caused problems with visibility. The new road markings will cost about $500.

ter island altogether would solve the issue. A third submission, from cycling advocacy group Spokes Canterbury, suggested the ban should not apply to cyclists if it went ahead. Ms Carter said city council staff would report back to the community board about options for changing the splitter island. “We’ll just wait and see what they say,” she said. “It will be interesting to see if they can actually do that, it’s still got to be safe.” “It’s a little issue that’s become a big issue,” she said of the intersection.

NOR’WEST NEWS

Musician’s Afghan collaboration for Musician Kerry Coulshed has spent much of the year working with two entrepreneurs in Afghanistan to create a video project. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about working creatively across borders, while juggling family, study and her own work. So how did this project begin? I guess it all started with a song, which I originally wrote in response to the earthquakes. It never really went anywhere, and remained unfinished for a while, until I read a book called The Dressmaker of Khair Khana, which is the story of a young woman, Kamila Sidiqi, who secretly employed more than 30 women in Afghanistan under the Taliban rule. One of the themes of the story was the amazing things that people, particularly women, can do in the face of adversity, and the strength of people when they come together. I was trying to express similar themes in the song, and it reinspired me to finish it. I sent the song to Kamila, just to say thanks for the inspiration, really, not expecting to hear anything back. Within 24 hours she had emailed back to say that she loved the song. After emailing and skyping back and forth, we came up with the idea of collaborating to create a music video for the song, and she got a local filmmaker, Roya Sadat, involved. So tell me more about these women? They are both incredible women, who are doing amazing things in Afghanistan and have contacts across the world. Kamila is a powerful enterprising

woman who is running significant programmes around Kabul. Roya is also based in Kabul, and she’s incredibly talented. I believe she was the first person to start a creative business in the city after the fall of the Taliban. Roya’s focus is on empowerment of women through creativity, and she runs several film festivals in Afghanistan. She believes that this could be part of helping to create the new image of the Afghan woman. As you got to know these women, what similarities have you discovered between their lives and yours? A lot, actually. We have young children. We’re passionate about what we do. We believe in the importance of empowering women, and how collaboration can create change. We think outside of the square, and we’re willing to take risks. Of course, the risks I take don’t even compare to what they’re facing. I don’t have a lot to lose at all

POWER OF TECHNOLOGY: Musician Kerry Coulshed has organised most of the Beautiful Beast project via Skype and email from her St Martins home. through this project, but they could lose everything. That’s one of so many things that makes me feel incredibly humbled, and honoured, about getting the chance to work with these women. I think I went into this with a degree of ignorance about the situation over there. I read books and I watched movies about it, but it’s not until you make those real connections that your viewpoint really changes. Has working with these women

changed your own work as a musician? It hasn’t – I think it has reinforced my approach as an artist. I’ve always seen music as a way to respond to things around me in an authentic way, and to connect to people through that. I’ve always been interested in music and performance, since I was a young child, but it wasn’t until a few years ago that I had the courage to share what I wrote. I’ve done a bit of performing

around Christchurch. We formed a band a few years ago, Duchess Swift, and performed at a lot of venues around Christchurch which no longer exist! After the earthquake everything changed, and a lot of people moved or moved on. Taipei Teahouse, the duo I started with Billy Mills, emerged from that. We spent most of last year writing music, and released our EP at the beginning of May, but the fundraising gig we’re holding [this week] will be our first live performance.

new video project A year seems a long time to wait before performing any of your music! It is a long time, and that isn’t something we would normally do. But organising gigs takes a lot of time, and we thought, let’s just make some music, and really focus on the music. Now we’re really excited to be finally performing. So tell me more about Billy. Where did you meet? Billy’s a really interesting guy. He’s doing honours studies in biochemistry at Canterbury University at the moment, and he’s also an incredibly talented musician. We met while he was working in a music shop about four years ago. We had a few days to find a bass player for a gig, and I went in there to ask if they knew of anyone who could do it. He said yeah, I could do it. We’ve come together with quite different skills and backgrounds. He focuses more on the production side of our music. Tell me about your experiences with past bands. What genres have you experimented with? Oh, some of them have been awful, I don’t really want to talk about them! It has been mostly blues, pop, folk music. Genres are difficult to define, because when you sit down to write music you never really know what will come out of it. We define ourselves as indie-tronica, but that is more defined by the way we make our music than the way it sounds. Tell me about the process of writing your music? I’ll usually come up with an

PRODUCTION: Afghan film director and producer Roya Sadat is working on pre-production for the Beautiful Beast project, which will be filmed at four different locations across Afghanistan. idea, a couple of lines or a harmony, with an idea of the sort of emotion I’d like to portray. Then Billy might come up with some chords, and it can all progress pretty quickly from there. Sometimes we’ll end up in a philosophical debate in the middle of the session, which is actually how we came up with the name Taipei Teahouse. I spent some time in Asia, and the teahouses there were where people came to connect, but also where politic leaders had historically come to put their weapons aside and debate issues openly and honestly. Then they’d pick up their weapons and start fighting again! That’s what we’re trying to achieve with our music. It’s not a collection of love songs, we’re trying to say something

through each piece. You’ve spent the last year at the CPIT jazz school. What inspired you to go back to school? The most amazing part of it was just being overloaded with music. I have a passion for learning all there is to know about music, and it has been a great experience. I’ve got two kids, so it is a big juggle to make it all happen, but it has reinforced to me the importance of following things that light your fire. Tell me about your family. I have two boys, who are five and seven. They’re awesome, really active and creative boys who love adventures and are learning how to challenge and question the world. My husband, Mike, runs a business dealing with rockfalls, so he works in a lot of remote areas

and is an amazing problem solver. Have you always lived in Canterbury? No, I’m from the North Island originally. I grew up in Hamilton, and we lived in Auckland for a while. We moved here about 11 years ago, mostly to get away from Auckland! We loved the mountains, and all the opportunities for outdoor adventure here. With so much going on in your life, how do you fit everything in? I’m also working this year, so it is a challenge. We don’t watch TV. There are enough hours in the day, but you just have to make the time for what’s important. These things, family and learning and creating, are all things that I’m really passionate about, so it works. Sometimes it’s a bit too busy, but it’s really just about finding that balance. So what’s next on the agenda for you? The big thing right now is fundraising for the Beautiful Beast project. We’ve got until September to raise $9000 for the filming. Preproduction is already happening over there, and they’ll have about 30 actors in the script filming across four locations. We’ve got our first gig at the Dux Live next week, which I’m really excited about. After this project, do you plan to continue to work with these women? We’ve got no plans for further projects, but I would love to. This project has evolved so smoothly and naturally, it leaves me with a sense that anything could happen.

QUARTER CENTURY: Current Rotary Club of Christchurch Sunrise member Marshall Wright, left, is joined by outgoing president Sharon Woodings, past member Warner Barber and founding president Harry Wicken at a celebration of the club’s 25 year anniversary.

Celebrating 25 years of service and success Past and present members and friends of the Rotary Club of Christchurch Sunrise came together on Friday, June 13 to celebrate 25 years of service to the community. The club, which holds early Friday meetings in Bealey Ave was joined by friends from as far away as their sister club in Frankston, Melbourne for the evening celebration. The group has volunteered time to help thousands of residents with events including children’s entertainment, rugby car parking, film festivals, house auctions and telethons. The club has provided community activities for youth, organising Rotary youth exchanges and being involved in courses in leadership and sciences, Outward Bound, secondary school speech contests and Special Olympics. The club has also supported the set-up of the Rotary Club, a group of young people who

contribute in many ways to the well-being of our city. More recently, club members have been involved in the clean-up of tagging from Christchurch buildings left vacant after the earthquake and members were amongst the many helping to deliver food hampers and water to those affected immediately after the February 2011 earthquake. Christchurch Sunrise has also been involved internationally in Polio eradication, the Tanzania water project, a school classroom for Vanuatu, Pacific Disaster relief and help with the aftermath of the Australian bush fires. The 25th jubilee gave the club the opportunity to celebrate their success and to honour several members who have had outstanding success in the work they have done through the club.

Quake heroes get bravery awards • From page 1 “We weren’t outsiders coming to help, we live in the city,” he said. “The emotion of that tragic circumstance was very raw and that has stayed with me, we were all very emotionally invested in what we were doing.” Having left the Royal New Zealand Navy shortly after the earthquake, Lieutenant-Commander Carr now works as the logistics manager for the All Blacks, but “wouldn’t skite” about his rescue efforts. He has stayed a reserve with the navy. He is one of three local heroes named as New Zealand Bravery Medal recipients today. Station officer Paul Rodwell,

of Northwood, who worked with other firefighters tunnelling to access survivors in the CTV building has also been named on the list. Mr Rodwell lead a team of tunnellers that found a small group of students trapped under a beam. Two bodies had to be removed before the team could reach the three students, who were rescued by the team. A civilian doctor had to perform an amputation on one of the students before they could be freed. Mr Rodwell was unable to use breathing apparatus or wear a helmet during his rescue efforts, due to the tight conditions and had to pass debris back along the tunnel because there was no

ing. He then joined three other firefighters tunnelling to reach two women trapped under a balcony overhang, having to break through layers of concrete with hand tools and grinders. The team tunnelled through office equipment, furniture and debris to reach the victims and were unable to wear protective gear because the tunnels were too small. Mr Payton moved into a void beside one of the women to reassure her as another firefighter cleared an access hole before she was rescued with crushed toes. He worked in unstable and confined conditions under a constant threat of aftershocks for four hours.

Senior firefighter Simon Payton, of Papanui, was also named as a medal recipient for his work at the Pyne Gould Corporation building, where 30 people were trapped on February 22. STORY TIME: Storyteller and historian Margaret Copland kept pupils at St Michael’s Church School captivated for nearly two hours with her dramatic stories of the lives of early Canterbury settlers. The story session was part of a term study on the early settlers, with the students drawing parallels between the calls for pioneers to emigrate to the district and the current international recruitment drive to help rebuild Christchurch.

Students produce TV show Year 12 media studies students from St Andrew’s College have produced their own children’s TV show. The show, which has a cultural focus on China was produced as part of the students’ year 12 NCEA assessment using the school’s TV studio facility. Students also used an outside broadcast van and set up a second studio in the St Andrew’s College preparatory school. The show, called Fusion also involved 42 year 6 pupils and 33 year 3 pupils and a number of former students who work in the TV industry who helped oversee the production. While year 12 students were assessed on their technical skills, the junior pupils perfected new-found crafts, taught to them by Confucius Institute members who joined the show. Pupils were taught about Mandarin, calligraphy, Kung Fu and Chinese bracelet-making. Year 3 student Jenna Howell said she enjoyed calligraphy “because

instead of writing words we just used one character.” Classmate Victor Sherborne enjoyed learning Kung Fu. “We learnt some easy moves and tried to remember the names. I also did paper cutting and made a snowflake,” he said. More than 300 students at the St Andrew’s College secondary school take TV and media studies as options. Head of media studies Simon Williams said returning students who now work in the TV and film industry were valued highly by the school. “It was fantastic to have the support of these brilliant young people who began their television life with us when they were at school; now they regularly return to teach and support present students. I can’t tell you how much pleasure I get from this relationship, and how I enjoy watching their knowledge being shared with our current students,” he said.

KIND DONATION: ANZ Avonhead branch manager Scott Wood with Waimairi School netball players Jade Feneon, Baylee Pitman and Katelynn Donaldson.

Netball gear boost for Waimairi School Waimairi School scored big after receiving an ANZ netball grant worth over $1000, just in time for their school centenary. The grant, which includes playing uniforms, balls, bibs and a gear bag, means the school has brand new gear to provide to their budding netballers. Coach Danielle Donehue says the grant will be a real boost for the school. “Our netballers have been playing in uniforms that aren’t up to scratch. The skirts are either too big or too small, have Velcro and pins all over them to keep them in place, have broken zippers and are all dif-

ferent colours. The bibs are even worse. Half of the letters have peeled off and they need to be knotted to stay on.” “Our school is 100 years old this year and although the uniforms aren’t that old they sure look it. We are so thankful to ANZ and our incredible community for supporting us and making our special birthday year even more memorable,” she said This year ANZ is awarding $100,000 of netball grants to help clubs, schools, social teams and fans around the country get more from their favourite sport. Avonhead says the bank launched the programme to help Kiwi netballers achieve their goals. “The ANZ Netball Grant Scheme was set up to support all levels of the game, from social teams who play for fun, through to aspiring professionals.” “Waimairi School has a long and proud history in Christchurch. We are delighted to award them with this grant in BALLERS: Waimairi School netball players Jade Feneon, Baylee Pitman and Katelynn Donaldson. their centenary year. I’m sure the new uniforms will have them taking the court with pride and leading the school into another 100 years of success,” he said.

New Zealand’s economy grew at a 3.3 per cent rate in the year through March, the fastest pace in eight years, supporting the central bank’s view that it must press on with interest rate increases to keep inflation at bay. The economy grew at a 1 per cent pace in the first three months of the year, from an upwardly revised 1 per cent gain in the fourth quarter, marking three quarters of growth at 1 per cent or above, Statistics NZ said. Quarterly growth was below the Reserve Bank’s 1.1 per cent expectation and the 1.2 per cent expected in a Reuters poll of economists although the annual rate beat the Reuters forecast for 3.1 per cent. New Zealand’s economic expansion in the latest quarter was helped by a 12.5 per cent rise in construction, which accounted for two-thirds of GDP growth and marked its largest increase in 14 years. Last week, the Reserve Bank hiked the official cash rate by a quarter point to 3.25 per cent and said the economy’s expansion had “considerable momentum”, raising its estimate for growth in the first half of the year to 4 per cent from 3.5 per cent. “While the headline was a bit

HEALTHY: New Zealand’s economic expansion in the latest quarter was helped by a 12.5 per cent rise in construction. softer than we or the Reserve Bank had expected, taking revisions to previous quarters into account, today’s result still suggests that the economy had developed considerable momentum at the start of the year,” Westpac senior economist Michael Gordon said in a note. “Today’s numbers will do nothing to dissuade the Reserve Bank from its intention to continue hiking the OCR in its July review.” New Zealand’s central bank is expected to deliver another two rate rises this year, according to a Reuters poll of economists.

ost of us who don’t hold good posture throughout the day suffer from aches and pains. Holding proper posture makes us feel more confident and reduces the likelihood of back/neck discomfort and injury. When we have poor posture, this can lead to tension, fatigue and pain, and cause wear and tear on your joints. At Form Fitness, the expert team can work with you to improve your posture by designing a personalised corrective exercise programme specifically for you to eliminate these problems. “Optimal posture is when the body is fully aligned where there is little stress on the joints and nerves, and muscles work in synergy with each other. Achieving this balance is crucial to reaching your goals, whatever they are,” says Janelle from Form Fitness. Along with poor posture, muscle imbalances can also be a common precursor to injury. When the body’s muscles aren’t working in synergy with each other, it puts more stress on the compensating muscles and eventually leads to wear and tear of the joints.

leaf extract DNA more complex Olive - nature’s extraordinary immune support than first thought A s far ago as 1927, doctors used olive leaf to reduce fevers and knock out malaria. Scientists have discovered that olive leaf contains powerful nutrients that can directly interfere and even destroy nearly every type of diseasecausing micro-organisms including bacteria, fungi, mould, parasites, viruses and even yeast infections. As well as this, olive leaf has immune-enhancing benefits by activating immune cells that fight infection. For these reasons, it has become a popular tonic herb that can be used to keep the immune system strong as well as when needed to dramatically speed up recovery of conditions like colds and flus, pneumonia, tuberculosis, herpes, shingles, urinary infections, yeast infections and much more. It has also been found beneficial for

T

chronic fatigue syndrome, low energy levels, exotic and deadly tropical diseases, two types of leukaemia and some cancers. In many chronic health conditions (e.g. cancer), the immune system is rundown and it is easy to have complications that are often life-threatening. Olive leaf may be an ideal option to boost the immune system and allow the body to have more energy to help heal itself. Olive leaf has also been found to be an effective cardiovascular tonic, helping normalise high blood pressure, improve cholesterol quality, improve heartbeat irregularities, improve blood flow and vascular disorders.

LET’S LEARN TO DANCE

T EFFECTIVE: Researchers have developed an oral vaccine which is 86 per cent effective in preventing cholera infection.

New hope in cholera scourge A cheap and easy-to-deliver oral vaccine against cholera is 86 per cent effective in preventing the infection, which causes severe diarrhoea and can be fatal, researchers say. About 1.4 billion people around the globe were at risk for cholera in 2012, says the World Health Organisation. Cholera is caused by Vibrio cholerae bacteria, which can spread through the water supply in places where sanitation and hygiene are poor. The study in last month’s New England Journal of Medicine was the first to measure the effectiveness of a vaccine Shanchol in response to a cholera outbreak under field conditions, in Guinea. Previously, the vaccine had been tested only under experimental conditions in India. The research in Guinea, by Doctors Without Borders (Medecins Sans Frontieres), involved more than 300,000 doses of the two-dose vaccine, administered during a cholera outbreak in 2012. It was 82 to 86 per cent effective, and had few side effects. However, researchers were unable to compare one versus two doses in preventing cholera, and it remains unknown how long the vaccine can remain effective at room temperature. Three cholera vaccines are currently on the world market. Shanchol is less expensive and easier to store than another leading vaccine, Dukoral, and the two are comparable in terms of effectiveness. Shanchol costs US$1.85 a dose, compared to Dukoral at US$5.25. Both may offer some protection against cholera for up to five years. The World Health Organisation has approved two vaccines for UN agencies to buy. A third vaccine, mORC-VAX, is licensed and produced only in Vietnam. More than 1.6 million doses of Shanchol have been distributed worldwide in the past three years. The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation has pledged support for 20 million doses over the next five years. — AFP

Using an iPhone to control diabetes A device that uses a modified iPhone to help regulate the blood sugar of people with type 1 diabetes appears to work better than an insulin pump, researchers say. The so-called “bionic pancreas” is the latest in the search to improve the lives of people who have type 1 diabetes, which means their bodies do not produce insulin, a hormone that regulates blood sugar. Three million people in the United States have type 1 diabetes, which is far less common than type 2 diabetes. It is commonly known as juvenile diabetes because it tends to appear in children and young adults. People with type 1 diabetes must prick themselves for blood samples multiple times daily in order to monitor their glucose levels, and then either inject insulin or receive it from a pump. The new method involved an iPhone 4S, which ran a control algorithm for insulin and glucagon, combined with a tiny needle that is inserted under the skin to monitor real-time glucose levels. A total of 52 adults and youths tried the combination for five days.

Incredible value! Great choice!

An iconic central city restaurant has changed - Tiffany’s Restaurant in the historic Tudor House has had a bold change of direction. “Our city has been affected by change. Being situated in the Christchurch CBD we wanted to support our changing city by creating a business that is willing and able to adapt to suit the area and the customers. We listened to our customers and this is what we came up with,” said Kristin McLay, co-owner. Now operating as Regatta on Avon, it offers top quality casual restaurant/café dining and an extensive bar service that includes boutique wine and beer - all with a stunning river view. Totally refurbished, what was Tiffany’s now resembles a comfortable, modern alehouse. The decor is classy in warm metallic brown, gold, silver and black toning with bold striped feature walls, chunky dark stained furniture and a well appointed bar sporting an attractive retrodesign tiled surround. For those not wishing to dine in the open bar area, there is a separate dining room. The main bar/restaurant area opens out onto a paved courtyard that steps down to the banks of the Avon River. “We’re in an exciting position,” said Kristin. “We’re located directly across from the repositioned Re-Start Mall, so we’re nice and handy for shoppers wanting anything from a simple coffee through to snacks and meals - plus the Council has plans of developing the riverside.” Regatta On Avon is perfect for any occasion, from a business lunch through to
